Last week, across the state, students were accepted to Governor’s School, including East Duplin’s Alyssa Acevedo.

When asked about this award, she said, “It is a prestigious residential program…my school nominated me for my previous English II exam grade.”

Acevedo was awarded enrollment in Governor’s School West for English. This is a 4-week, summer intensive residential program, at Winston-Salem State University.

Acevedo said, “Writing is one of my passions, so I will definitely enjoy exploring the complexity of the English language!”

Governor’s School is not an easy achievement, and it is not awarded to just anyone.

Acevedo said, “The school has around a 40% acceptance rate for nominees, so I am honored to have been selected.”

Her mother, Missy Acevedo, is a math and science teacher at Beulaville Elementary School.

Missy Acevedo states, “This achievement is so important to me as a parent because I have always tried to instill in my children the belief that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to…this achievement was literally a dream come true for my daughter.”

Acevedo’s education is important to both the mother and the daughter.

Missy Acevedo said, “I am thrilled that her efforts are being rewarded with this awesome opportunity.”

Students across the state have benefited from attending Governor’s school.

When asked, Acevedo said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my school and county through this once-in-a-lifetime occasion.”
