North Carolina Governor School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students which integrates academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two candidacies. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline but does not involve any credit tests or assignments.

Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by both their school and their public school unit. The program is administered by the public schools of North Carolina, the state board of education, and the department of public instruction through the division of advanced learning and gifted education.

Alyssa Acevedo is the daughter of Gilbert and Melissa Acevedo and is a student at East Duplin High School. She was selected to attend gov school west this summer, at Winston-Salem State University to study English.

Wilmer Reyes-Rosales is the son of Jaime and M Reyes, and is a student at Wallace Rose-Hill School. He was selected to attend gov school east this summer at Meredith College to study social science.

Each student was presented with a certificate of recognition for their outstanding achievement on behalf of the Duplin County Board of Education.
