James Sprunt Community College participates in Duplin Career and College Fair

James Sprunt Community College recently participated in the Duplin County Career and College Fair for tenth graders. The event was held on Wednesday, March 9th at the Duplin Events Center in Kenansville, NC.

The event was a tremendous success with representation from approximately 70 employers and college representatives in attendance. Roughly 650 10th grade students were split into groups of 5-24 students. Groups traveled to booths categorized by career clusters (groupings of similar careers). Booths would contain 3-4 presenters who would share specific information about the career they represented.

A college representative whose college offered the course of study would be present in each booth. Sessions lasted for forty minutes, allowing each presenter to discuss their specific program area while leaving room for a question-and-answer segment for the students.

Examples of the questions presenters were prepared to answer were as follows:
•What type of interests, abilities, and skills would help a person to be successful in your occupation?
•What type of education/training, technical knowledge, or experience is necessary for this kind of work?
•What advice would you give a student interested in this career?
•What type of starting position and salary would someone entering this field be most likely to find?
•Do you work in teams?

James Sprunt was more than willing to have a presence at this special event. JSCC is notably passionate about connecting students with careers. JSCC had thirteen programs represented at this event. Instructors were provided with program specific promotional material and a few goodies for fun!

JSCC is thankful for the connections with Duplin County Schools. JSCC instructors are more than happy to help students find the course of study that’s right for them and provide them with a network of local employers. JSCC has the goal to see even more students excited to join the family!
