Duplin County teachers awarded for "Ag in the Classroom"

One of many farming and agriculture advocacy programs sponsored by North Carolina Farm Bureau is Ag in the Classroom. This unique Pre-K – 12 educational program is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the importance of agriculture in our state.

Agriculture continues to be the number one industry in North Carolina and certainly is vital to Duplin County. Ag in the Classroom provides teaching resources to include book suggestions and related activities, lesson plans and videos that teachers can incorporate into multiple content areas.

Ag in the Classroom also offers grants to teachers. Twenty-five grants worth up to $500 each are awarded twice a year.

Teachers at Board of Education meeting

Three Duplin County teachers were awarded grants at the January 4th Board of Education Meeting. Justin Edwards, Duplin County Farm Bureau President, presented the awards to Tim Mateer and Tanya Novakowski of Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary School and Lois Davey of Wallace-Rose Hill High School. Each teacher shared the hands-on learning experiences they have planned for their students.

  • Mr. Mateer’s project, “PUT IT UP! Food Preservation for Every Home”, aims to teach students how to can and dehydrate foods for future use.

  • “Eagles Rock and Roll!” will allow Ms. Novakowski to purchase a rock tumbler and to expose her students to various rocks and minerals from across the United States that will culminate in a 50 State Rock project that will be displayed at the school.

  • Ms. Davey wants her students to learn from seed to harvest through an elevated garden of vegetables and flowers through her project, “Seed Us Grow”.

Congratulations to these teachers and thanks to NC Farm Bureau for their generosity and support for Duplin County Schools’ STEAMA initiatives. The deadline for the next round of grant applications is April 15, 2022. Interested teachers can learn more and apply here.
