Duplin County Sheriff's Office warns of COVID scam

The following was posted by the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook:

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware that information has circulated that the sheriff’s office is investigating incidents where individuals stating they are with a political party and are giving away free masks. They ask people to try the masks on for a fit test. Supposedly, the masks are lined with a chemical that causes the individual to become unconscious and then the perpetrators rob the unconscious victims.

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office has not had any reports of this happening and has not been investigating any reported incidents. However, as with any scams please take precautions and do not allow anyone into your home for demonstrations or accept any free items from anyone unless you are CERTAIN who the individuals are and you are confident with the services they provide. Please contact the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office or your local law enforcement authorities with any possible scam activity.
