Fulbright fellows visit Wallace Rose-Hill High School

Wallace-Rose Hill High School recently hosted 17 international teachers who are participating in the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program. Secondary teachers from across the globe are selected to spend six weeks at a university in the United States strengthening their craft and learning about American culture. UNC-Wilmington serves as their host university.

Fulbright fellows juggle taking classes, observing and co-teaching in local schools, and learning about the culture of the surrounding area. Fellows are paired with a Friendship Family who invite them to stay in their homes.

While the majority of their time is spent in New Hanover County Schools, the fellows spent a morning at WRH. They were treated to a southern breakfast of bacon, eggs, grits (which most had never heard of) and biscuits from Billy’s Pork and Beef. Representatives from Duplin County Schools welcomed the fellows and provided an overview of the school system. Then fellows spent time in classrooms observing teaching and learning, STEAMA style!

Dr. Donyell Roseboro, UNCW Chief Diversity Officer and Professor, says this about the program, “Education is one of the most powerful spheres of influence and possibility in the world. It is inspiring to witness how learning crosses borders and connects us all. Despite the challenges of disasters, pandemics and different forms of government, education shows us there are still places where we can come together in hope.”

The 2022 UNCW cohort of fellows represent the following countries: Argentina, Columbia, India, Iraq, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, and Latvia.
