Matthew Mobley makes Duplin County proud at National 4-H Shooting Sports Championship

On June 26th, Matthew Mobley entered into a week long event in Grand Island, Nebraska, for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championship. The event took place through July 1st.

Matthew is a member of the Duplin County 4-H Shooting Sports club.

The North Carolina Shooting Sports program hosts three regional tournaments. Matthew competed at the regional tournament in Columbia, NC. The participant must qualify in the top five to advance to the state tournament.

Participants are then selected to try out for the national team.

The national team for each discipline consists of 3-4 youth from across the state of North Carolina. Matthew was chosen as one of them, and competed in the recurve archery division.

Joe Mobley, Matthew’s father said, “I would have never thought that he would go this far when we started in 2019.”

At nationals, recurve archers compete in three different activities.

A Field Round which consists of shooting four arrows each at 14 different targets. FITA round which is four different distances with a total of 72 arrows and a 3D shoot which consists of 30 targets.

Matthew placed 10th as an individual in the Field, 4th as an individual in FITA, and 2nd as an individual in 3D. The North Carolina team placed 4th in the Field, 1st in FITA, and 1st in 3D.

The overall scores, all events combined, Matthew placed 3rd as an individual. The North Carolina team placed 1st in recurve archery.

Matthew Mobley said, “I felt honored to represent North Carolina and just excited to be able to be apart of this experience.”
