Soul-Full Sisters: Grilled Sausage Queso

Soul-Full Sisters: Grilled Sausage Queso

From the recipe box of the Soul-Full Sisters

Under those shady live oaks, I watched daddy wipe tears away from his eyes. If you think real men don’t cry, I’m here to tell you that they do. Our daddy is the definition of real. Fearlessness, in our eyes by his example, is to love so deeply, raw emotion flows freely. Fearlessness is to be real at all times. Real isn’t always strong, real is weak. Real is human. Therefore, our daddy is superhuman.

But on that day, the perfume of smoke and sweet tunes of raspy, Southern-rock legends filled the air – midnight promises don’t mean a thing, especially in the early morning light. “Midnight Promises” – a duet by Toy Caldwell and Greg Allman – was daddy’s song of choice that day, because it was on that day Greg Allman passed. And rather than singing he listened, he remembered, he cried. My sister and I are just simply humbled to witness the splendors of the purity, honesty, and simplicity of his emotions.

A great deal of his lessons taught, were taught in song. He would play Simple Man on his acoustic guitar and whisper, “Girls, this is the song to live by.” And he was right; the lyrics are laced with weights of wisdom. Words like honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones:

Take your time…don’t live too fast, troubles will come and they will pass.

Be something you love and understand.

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold, all that you need is in your soul.

And don’t forget son there is someone up above.

We think the recipe to all things soul-full is divinely linked to our daddy’s heart. To experience a love like his, is to experience a love like His – if you catch our drift – and my sister and I are blessed to be on the receiving end. His cup truly runneth over and we hope it runneth over to you.

This recipe was written on the day Greg Allman passed but we’d like to take this time to dedicate this post to all the sweet, Southern voices that fill our home with great soul, because there is no greater duet, in our book, than food and music.

We hope you can join us while we prepare this tasty bite al fresco while listening to Marshall Tucker, or maybe even a little Leon! Because today is a special day, today is Daddy’s day.
