UMO hosts Stem on the Green, JSCC attends

The University of Mount Olive hosted 644 third graders from Wayne and Duplin County for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fair, called Stem On The Green. The event took place on Friday, October 29th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on the campus lawn near Pope Wellness Center. Over 40 interactive booths were featured!

This year James Sprunt’s booth was centered around embryology. Students were able to see how a chick develops in the egg, learned new terminology, used microscopes to view developing chicks, observed the contents of table eggs, compared real eggs from different species of birds, and studied the internal and external anatomy of birds using life size scaled models of laying hens.

Students also learned about the different jobs related to the poultry and egg industries. The students were excited to learn about chick development and really liked cracking table eggs and exploring the structures that make up the eggs they enjoy for breakfast.

The supplies for this year’s booth for STEM on the Green were purchased from a US Poultry Foundation Grant awarded to the Livestock and Poultry Technology Program at James Sprunt. This grant is used in part to help foster student scientists and promote careers in the poultry and egg industry.

A special thanks goes out to Ms. Star Jackson of our Agriculture Education Department.
